A Developers Approach To Basic SEO

Months ago I got a job at a web development company that also does search engine optimization. When I program websites to be functional when JavaScript and CSS are disabled, I learned that it also created a very nice website for the search engines to crawl.

As I learn about SEO I notice there are many theories of how Google ranks people. My experience in SEO is very limited, however, I can tell you some basic tips that boost SEO. If you are not ranking at all you are probably missing something below.

  1. Content
  2. Usability
  3. Other Websites

Without content search engines do not know what your website is all about. Content is the soul reason your website should exist.

Search engines can not see sites loaded using JavaScript. This is one area I want to speak directly about in future articles. I have created SEO Ajax. A friendly way to let everyone access your content.

Last but not least, other websites matter. If you have several people linking to you and they have several people linking to them, you are worth something. However, if nobody links to them, those links are worth less.

With content, usability, and friends, a website has a much better chance at ranking than a site without these things. But don’t take just my word for it, visit my work’s Utah SEO blog for much more information about SEO.
